    An apple a day really could keep the doctor away, according to a new study from Oxford University. Researchers compared past studies on the health benefits of fruit consumption against results from people who took statins, a class of drug used to lower cholesterol. This analysis found that eating an apple a day provided almost the same level of protection against stroke and heart disease as statins did — but without side effects such as diabetes and muscle disease. Apples are high in fiber, which can slow the build-up of plaque in arteries; and rich in antioxidants and flavanoids, which give the immune system a boost.
